Overview

Your archetype is arguably the most important choice you make while creating a hero or a villain. It determines which powers are—and aren't—available for you to use during the entire lifetime of your character. The decision of which archetype to play should be made based on what type of philosophy you wish to use for your character.

City of Heroes Archetypes

When you first make a character, you may select one of five available archetypes.

Archetypeicon blaster.png Blaster
Archetypeicon controller.png Controller
Archetypeicon defender.png Defender
Archetypeicon scrapper.png Scrapper
Archetypeicon tanker.png Tanker

After a Hero character reaches level 50, two more archetypes become available.

Archetypeicon peacebringer.png Peacebringer
Archetypeicon warshade.png Warshade

City of Villains Archetypes

When you first make a character, you may select one of five available archetypes.

V archetypeicon brute.png Brute
V archetypeicon corruptor.png Corruptor
V archetypeicon dominator.png Dominator
V archetypeicon mastermind.png Mastermind
V archetypeicon stalker.png Stalker

After a Villain character reaches level 50, two more archetypes become available.

Play Style Archetypes

These are archetypes that players have created by playing existing archetypes in ways that they were not exactly designed for.

Archetypeicon blaster.png Blapper
Archetypeicon defender.png Offender
Archetypeicon scrapper.png Archetypeicon tanker.png Scranker
V archetypeicon mastermind.png Blastermind
